SANTA MONICA (CBSLA) – As looters were ransacking stores in Santa Monica Sunday during the George Floyd protests, one man took matters into his own hands.

The owner of Broadway Wine & Spirits, located in the 1000 block of roadway, told CBSLA he and some friends decided to stand in front of his store armed with guns.

He said that as looters neared the store, they instead decided to keep walking once they saw his AR-15 and the other guns.

“It was a good thing I had my customers and friends by my side, because it was pretty scary,” Joe told CBSLA.

Joe said he and his friends also helped keep other nearby businesses safe as well.

Santa Monica’s Third Street Promenade was hit hard by looting and fires Sunday. A Vons grocery store in the 700 block of Broadway was completely ransacked as well. Santa Monica Mayor Kevin McKeown said nine fires were set. There were no serious injuries to officers or protesters.

Santa Monica will again be under curfew orders Monday beginning at 1 p.m. for its business districts and 4 p.m. citywide.

I literally drove by this location, in the neighborhood. WHERE I LIVE. As an african american in the car driving on the street they told me I shouldn’t be around here and he pointed his laser Ar-15 at the car. Along with the other THUGS. There were 20 of them with 7 guns drawn on our car. Who are they to try to protect LIQUOR of all things. You could also tell they were all highly intoxicated. They were literally antagonizing people on the street. All primarly white americans pointing guns at an african american who they do not know. Who is also a resident of the community.

I feel sorry to hear that. But you are in a war zone man, what you expect? Respect is gone under the intense situation. If that was me, I certain feel offended, but won’t be too struggle to understand.

Anyone who is openly carrying a hand gun or long gun on a public sidewalk or city street is subject to arrest for violating “Open Carry” laws under the California penal code.

If you are not a California licensed uniformed security guard who is “on duty,” you have no right to openly carry a handgun as a private citizen (non-LEOs)

If you point a firearm at someone who is not an immediate deadly threat to yourself or others, you can and will be arrested for “Assault With a Deadly Weapon” or “Brandishing a Firearm in a Rude of threatening Manner.” You can also be subject to Civil Lawsuits for the same behavior.

Making excuses for the Criminal Looters and Rioters..Fantastic…

BTW did you see those videos of people and store owners getting beat to a pulp with 2×4’s, Bricks, other items, and in some cases being shot ??? But that’s ok, right ??

  3. Citizen who is concerned says:

A business owner has every right to stand inside his business and protect his property, family, personal safety, and business. If the owners of the businesses that where looted, shot the looters upon entry, the first day this looting started, this would have stopped this rampant looting.
Through out history looters have been shot and hung. If you loot, you do it at your own peril.
We all know the these looters are not protesters. We welcome and stand with protesters.
    Looters we shoot.

  4. Lawrence Willis says:

It’s open season on looters. Make sure you take head shots, saves on ammo.

We need more people who can defend their property. Up with the right to bear arms and protect property. May we see more brave gun owners.
As long as we elect Democrats to positions of leadership of cities, I am afraid, we will see more our rights in danger. Santa Monica is a case study of poor leadership coming from the leaders.

  6. John Doe says:

What does that have to do with pointing guns and lasers at cars driving by?

  7. Skip says:

I guess you can call that scary looking AR15 a Defense Weapon !!!!! LOL !!!!!

  8. Daisy says:

If the Smpd is not going to protect residents in Santa Monica that pay taxes to have Smpd protections.
Then Santa Monica has to issue Open Gun carry permits for is residents.
People who called 911 for help where told that they couldn’t send cops. Where told you can use your own gun to defend yourself.told

This isn’t any different than during the 1992 LA Riots. Remember Korean-American Business owners were protecting their Businesses with whatever they could come up with. Many had AK47’s, but those weren’t vilified by the media at that point, unlike the AR15 is now.

Yes-one of those Ugly guns. Evil looking. He didn’t have to fire a shot. Nobody needs one of those.
