Man Killed In Attempted Carjacking In Yucca Valley Had Recently Married

YUCCA VALLEY (CBSLA.com) — A victim of an attempted carjacking killed Thursday in Yucca Valley was identified as a pharmaceutical representative who had recently married.

Obette Reyes Lacap was shot during the attempted carjacking in the parking lot of the Town Center Mall at the corner of Warren Vista Drive and 29 Palms Highway.

Heather Peterson, who works at a doctor's office inside the mall, was stunned to learn that the victim was Lacap.

"He's one of our reps," Peterson told CBS2's Greg Mills. "I just know that he was a very nice person. He recently got married. He was really excited about that."

Following the attempted carjacking, authorities say the suspects allegedly led the California Highway Patrol and deputies on a long pursuit that ended in a gun battle.

One of the two suspects was killed. The second suspect was injured and remained hospitalized on Friday.

A CHP officer, who was also wounded, was treated and released from a hospital.
