At first blush, ice hockey does not seem to be a sport in which adults are eager to partake while living in sunny Los Angeles. But it is, especially for those who miss sliding around the ice like they did when they were kids and more active athletes. That said, following are five of the top places to practice on frozen water made precisely for use for certain grownup occasions.

Pick-up hockey games are keen in this particular venue, a spiffy place to play in either an NHL rink or a pond on the premises. Know before you go, though, that you must be 18 years or older to take part and that full gear is required. Also realize that you are instructed to wear either a white or a black jersey before you even set your skated foot on the ice in either rink. From there on out, it's fun all around with some slipping and sliding in the offering for those who really get into the game. After experiencing the fast pace of this ice hockey game, check out Kings Cove for some grub to give you your energy back.

The women's program is a big winner at the L.A. Kings Valley Ice Center, especially for those ladies who really want to skate in a competitive way. Lessons are also on offer should you need to brush up on your skills before heading out on this frozen battlefield to take on your opponents.

Adults choose Burbank's Pickwick Ice venue for its convenience and for its well-kept facilities, part of which are taken care of by a team of Zambonis. Be sure to get to Pickwick at the beginning of a session so you can enjoy the best conditions possible and team up with others of your ilk to take on ice hockey devotees who play at the same speed as you do.

Pasadena Ice Skating Center is a great place if you're looking to get in some games of ice hockey. They charge $15 a person for pick-up games with the exception of the goalie, who gets away with putting out a mere five bucks. The age requirements are 18 and over, but 17-year-olds who want in on a game can do so if their parents give signed consent. Beyond that, Pasadena Ice Skating Center extends a Division 1-5 Hockey League to adults with draft skates that is scheduled in February.
