For people staying in or near the high-end Polanco district of Mexico City, Habita is a totally hip place to start the night. This funky boutique hotel has a much-loved rooftop bar with a swanky pool, specialty drinks and music videos projected on the neighboring buildings. This bar may not have dancing, but it is a high-energy place where young people often grab drinks before they go out dancing. The clean, contemporary decor and delicious tequila drinks will get you in the Mexico City mindset.

1OAK, which stands for "one of a kind," definitely lives up to its name. This club is glamorous, sophisticated and high energy. Owned by the international club manager group Butter, 1OAK was designed after the Manhattan, NY club scene of the 1980s and 1990s. It has the hottest DJs, beautiful clientele and superior service. Join the 1OAK Facebook group to see photos and get a better feel for the scene. Butter also owns clubs and restaurants in New York, so the vibe at 1OAK is definitely familiar to Americans.

El Hijo del Cuervo

Coyoacán, Del Carmen, 04000
Ciudad de México, D.F., Mexico

El Hijo del Cuervo is the best place to see live music. In addition to seeing awesome bands and enjoying cocktails and dancing, this club also serves food, so it is a great spot to go for a late dinner. It is by far the most popular bar in the area, so make sure to get there on the early side on Fridays and Saturdays to avoid lines - especially if your party wants a table. If you end up there on a weeknight, that is no problem because live bands perform on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Typically the bands are either rock or jazz.

For a low key but swanky scene, definitely check out La Opera Bar. This bar is an absolute must-see for Mexico City first timers because it is so historic; it opened in 1876 and is now Mexico's oldest continually running bar. The chandelier overhead and velvet drapes will provide an air of elegance. A popular locale for tourists, you'll likely be in the presence of other Americans. If your party isn't in the mood to dance, soak in some history and old school Mexican vibes at this one-of-a-kind spot.

This is a nightclub in every sense of the word. Sens is dark with colorful purple, pink and blue neon accents, sophisticated decor, and loud, upbeat music. Since opening in 2008, Sens has quickly become a favorite of Mexican partiers. Plan to take a cab here because it is not near public transportation.
