With top-rated movies such as “The Black Swan” and with the acclaimed Misty Copeland as the first African American performer to be appointed as a principal dancer for American Ballet Theatre, it is safe to say that ballet has become more culturally expanded over the years. More people are beginning to see ballet as a graceful form of art and expression, as well as a great fitness routine. If you are a dancer looking to branch out into ballet and are located in or near the Orange County area, here are a list of five ballet studios to check out.

Anaheim Ballet was established in August 1997, formally Coast Ballet Theatre. Since its interception, it has been presenting concerts throughout Orange and Los Angeles counties, as well as out of state in Arizona and Nevada. Anaheim Ballet also makes an effort to give back to the community through its educational and scholarship program called STEP UP!, which is committed to promoting classical ballet and providing its numerous benefits to the underserved. Anaheim Ballet collaborates with several renowned arts organizations which are The Orange County Performing Arts Center, Orange County Philharmonic Society, OCPAC From the Center Artists Series, Imagination Celebration, Orange County Pacific Symphony, San Juan Capistrano Mission, Capistrano Unified School District and Anaheim Public Schools. Together they offer career-track programs, student concerts, community concerts, summer intensive programs, master classes and dance-related educational courses.

The OC Dance Studio is that one-stop dance shop for the whole family. While the adults take their salsa and ballroom classes, kids can enjoy a session of ballet too. The age for kids start at three and go up to 13 with sessions starting at $79 a month for 60 to 90 minutes per week. In addition to ballet, kids can also learn jazz, tap, hip-hop, and ballroom dance.

The Orange County Dance Center is one of the oldest dance studios in Orange County. Under the ownership of Anthony and Terri Sellars, the dance center offers classes for a wide range of age groups and experience levels which include ballet, pointe, jazz, tap, lyrical, and hip hop. As students perfect their dance skills at Orange County Dance Theater, they have several opportunities available to them, from participating in the “June Show” recital each year to the summer intensive program and performing in the full-length “Nutcracker Ballet.”

For those that are more advanced in their dance skills, the Pro Dance Center is where you need to be. The center offers professional classes for children and adults in combo, ballet, belly, salsa, hip-hop, hula & Tahitian, jazz, contemporary, Persian, Zumba, tap, turn & technique and freestyle dance. You can also go beyond the traditional dances and practice for your wedding dance in the first wedding dance lessons. Once students perfect their routines, they are given recitals, exams and competitions to participate in.
