A different set of rules apply to Grammy Awards red carpet fashion. Rockin’ sometimes trumps elegance. Weirdness rules. And even the guys are willing to take chances they might not dare to attempt at the Oscars. But as is true of any red carpet, some people manage to work it better than others. By Alyson Fishbein

Electronic music producer Skrillex arrived in an all black, punk ensemble consisting of a leather motorcycle jacket and oversized glasses. Prescription? Probably not, but he clearly thinks they make him look cool. Good thing his songs are hits, because this outfit definitely is not.

Venezuelan band La Vida Boheme may not be well-known in the United States, but they certainly made an eye-catching appearance on the Grammy red carpet. The guys opted for all-white outfits covered in multi-colored spray paint. Not only is it all over their clothes, but the paint covers most of the band members’ faces as well.

Country singer and songwriter Alison Krauss is incredibly talented, but this dress definitely missed the mark. Although her hair and makeup look beautiful, the white crochet overlay on her dress is both unflattering and matronly. She also could’ve used a few more accessories to complete her outfit.

Comedian Kathy Griffin looked nothing short of fantastic on the red carpet. Her cream one-shoulder gown is completely age-appropriate, yet still sexy. It flatters her tiny frame without being too revealing and the chunky gold accessories add just enough glam to her look. Major fashion win for Griffin.

Jersey Shore star Nicole ‘Snooki’ Polizzi rocked her typical “guidette” look with high hair and a barely there BB Addiction mini-dress. The zebra print on her black mini and the bow on her head not only clash, but also look a little ridiculous. It’s safe to say she will probably end up on many of the Grammy Awards worst-dressed lists.

Nominee Adele showed off a new do and slimmer figure in a striking black beaded Armani gown. The songstress is donning her signature red lips and long lashes, which only compliment her beautiful features.

Bruno Mars wore his classic rat-pack style suit and shades and although he looked quite dapper, this particular look of his is becoming pretty repetitive and boring. It’s time for him to mix things up a bit.

Grammy host LL Cool J donned his signature black cap and a crisp black suit. His bow tie is a bit large and distracting, but nothing can take away from his famous smile and swagger.

Singer and nominee Fergie worked the red carpet in a sheer orange lace Jean Paul Gaultier gown with black undergarments peeping through. Not her classiest look, but she’s always been on the edgy side so if anyone can pull it off, it’s her.

The always beautiful Carrie Underwood wore a white long-sleeved sequined Gomez-Gracia gown with simple jewels and a stunning up-do. The dress seems a bit formal for the Grammys; however, she looks incredibly classy and chic. Definitely a best-dressed nominee.

Nicki Minaj. Sigh. Instead of wearing one of her crazy wigs and candy-colored concoctions, she decided to dress like a priestess. Hopefully there’s something exciting under the bulky Versace creation because as of now, it is a truly unattractive ensemble.

Katy Perry and her blue hair worked a pale blue beaded Elie Saab gown that undoubtedly belongs on the Oscars red carpet, not the Grammys. If her goal was to look like a classy smurf, mission accomplished.

Holy Rihanna. The bodacious singer continues to leave little to the imagination in a simple black Armani dress featuring a plunging neckline and low back. Dresses like this are pretty typical for the songstress considering she clearly likes to show a lot of skin and make a major entrance.

Taylor Swift‘s golden Zuhair Murad gown was incredibly beautiful, although it seemed to swallow her tiny frame. It was a lot of dress from the color to the embroidery to the high-neck — too much. She always goes for the sparkly, super feminine dresses, so it would be nice to see her try something new for a change.

Normally there is a disco ball present when we hear Jessie J‘s music, but now she has actually become one. Donning Julien Macdonald, this UK pop starlet has taken the feel of her music in a beautiful, yet edgy, pewter gown.
