LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) — A downtown Los Angeles hotel, shuttered by the coronavirus pandemic, has opened once more — this time as an 11-floor, 460-room temporary homeless shelter.

It’s the biggest and most ambitious move yet to get people experiencing homelessness off the streets by putting a major hotel just blocks from Skid Row to use housing the city’s most vulnerable.

The Salvation Army, which will supervise mental health and addiction services at the hotel, released a video showcasing the accommodations.

“It gives them an opportunity to be in a comfortable place, off the streets, out of the elements,” Major Osei Stewart, incident commander, said. “It gives them food to eat, three meals a day.”

The program will last for 90 days and provide case management to those being housed, but the question remains of what happens once the program ends.

“I wish I could tell the future,” Stewart said. “I know that we are going to make the best attempt to get people situated.”

The Los Angeles County Homeless Services Authority said the hope is that Project Roomkey will be a launching pad to provide ongoing services that keep people off the streets for good.

“We have service providers at every site,” Ahmad Chapman said. “We talk to them, offer them housing navigation and other supportive services to ensure that once their time in the hotel ends, we are able to exit each and every one of these folks into a program.”

The county set a goal of securing 15,000 motel and hotel rooms, but several weeks into the project, only 1,800 people are being housed as hundreds of hotels remain vacant.

“Everybody at LAHSA, the county and the city, who’s involved in this program, are working around the clock and as fast as they can to get as many hotel rooms under contract as possible.”

The federal government funds the majority of the program with state and city funds covering the remaining balance.

How do I find out which hotel this is? Not sure I would be wanting to stay at it in the future. Why dont they name it if this is such a great idea?

Because idiots will go protest and antagonize the people that are experiencing homelessness and staff. A lot of hotels and motels already run voucher programs. You just wouldn’t know it.

I saw the epidemic of TB in that area when I worked there in 1993. God Bless the State Workers. They tried, they really tried. A couple of years ago, I was talking with some friends and I told them this is going to be a mess when a real epidemic hits. One of my friends reminded me of that yesterday.

The Downtown News reported on August 12, 2019, there was an 11% increase of the homeless in the area known as Skid Row. There were now 4,757. “A 50-block community accounts for approximately 13% of the 36,135 homeless individuals in city limits. The county has nearly 59,000 homeless people.”

In October 2005, the CRA/LA, Community Redevelopment Agency of the City of Los Angeles reported that The Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA) estimated there were a total of 83,347 homeless people in the streets and in shelters on any one night.

SO GARCETTI AND THE LA CITY COUNCIL…SOMEONE HAS BEEN “DOCTORING” THE NUMBERS? YA’ THINK?

Coronavirus Spreads to Most Skid Row Homeless Shelters, Despite Efforts to Stop It
By Joel Grover and Josh Underwood-Davis • Published May 11, 2020

“Four out of five of Skid Row’s large homeless shelters now have clusters of people who have tested positive for COVID-19, the NBC4 I-Team has learned. The virus has also hit several homeless facilities outside Los Angeles’ Skid Row.

Clusters of cases have cropped up at other shelters, according to the LA County Department of Public Health website. There were four people testing positive at both the Midnight Mission and at the Weingart Center, and 100 at the Union Rescue Mission.

Dr. Barbara Ferrer, director of the LA County Department of Public Health, said Monday the county is investigating possible outbreaks at 23 homeless shelters.”

“The challenge that we’ve found is that our guests, which have overnight and day out access, are the ones who probably brought this in,” Smith said.

“The virus is also spreading to homeless facilities that are the centerpiece of LA Mayor Eric Garcetti’s longtime effort to get the homeless off the streets permanently–called “Bridge Homes.” The latest cluster of cases identified is at downtown’s LA Mission, where 14 residents tested positive, and now have been moved off-site.”

COVID-19 is running rampant through there now. Why didn’t you report that? The owners of these SHELTERS were CONNING BILLIONS OF DOLLARS every year from the FEDERAL GOVERNMENT. Nice shell game.

The city and the idiots who were “do-gooders” ran as fast as they could. And the owners of those shelters, they opened the doors a couple weeks ago, they let the men out, then they locked the doors and took off….No doubt with Suitcases Full of Cash.

But, the damage that the MAYOR GARCETTI, LA CITY COUNCIL, AND “ACTORS” and of course THE “SHARKS” MISLABELED AS SHELTERS,

THE REAL DAMAGE WAS THAT THEY HAVE ATTRACTED OVER 100,000 HOMELESS TO SKID ROW. COVID-19 IS NOW IN EPIDEMIC PROPORTIONS DOWN THERE.

IT WILL MUTATE and guarantee that MAYOR GARCETTI, LA CITY COUNCIL, all of those DO-GOODERS in Beverly Hills, and let’s not leave out the ACTORS that just could not give up FREE PUBLICITY…… What will they do then? What they are doing in New York City right now….They are going to FLEE as fast as they can right OUT OF LA.

And the HOMELESS WILL BE KICKED OUT of the newly created MOTELS that Governor NEWSOM put together called Project Roomkey….cute….Who taught him how to talk?….. which are motel rooms rented to protect the homeless from COVID-19, over 15,000 rooms.
Shucks, that sure ain’t ‘nuf ya’ think Govner? You fogot bout them thar Homeless, didn’ ye?

And I know the HOMELESS down there. And they WILL NOT GO INTO the HOTEL ROOMS in LA. Why? Because MAYOR GARCETTI PROMISED the Homeless 9 MONTHS AGO that they were EACH GOING TO GET THEIR OWN APARTMENT…..
And the HOMELESS WANT THE GOVERNMENT TO KEEP ITS WORD.
The Mayor and the LA City Council keep their word??? Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! What a hoot!

As I told one of the Homeless who lives down there, “Alex, they are not going to give you an apartment for free. Why? he asked. You are not a voter or a taxpayer, that’s why.” I hated to say that to him. But it is time to stop condemning people to death.

Since when does Garcetti get to put a whole society in danger, children in danger, elderly in danger, and even the homeless are a danger to themselves now. And today, I heard Garcetti talking about God. Hey GARCETTI….Try to understand this….I know it is going to near impossible for you but…
LISTEN UP BUSTER! (That was my mother talking just now) …I don’t even know if you can understand this…..
GOD IS NOT GOING TO SAVE YOUR POLITICAL CAREER.

YOU HAVE NO CHANCE OF BECOMING PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES.

Not unless you can single handedly bury over 50,000 bodies that you will be personally responsible for turning into corpses.

“I’ve been standing on a Rock, waitin’ for the wind to blow…..I’ve been standin’ on a Rock, waitin’ for the wind to blow…..I’ve been standin’ on a Rock waitin’ for my seeds to grow.”
The Homeless…to me….God, Keep them safe.
