Officer In Stable Condition After Being Shot In South LA

SOUTH LA (CBSLA) — An LAPD officer was shot Saturday night in South LA.

The officer was hospitalized and underwent surgery. The officer is in stable condition, according to LAPD spokesman Josh Rubenstein.

One suspect was struck by gunfire. That condition of that suspect is also unknown.

There is a second suspect on the loose who is believed to be armed.

Just after 9 p.m., officers from the Newton area gang division were conducting a traffic stop in the area of 51st Street and Long Beach Avenue.

Officers chased two people on foot who abandoned the vehicle.

According to LAPD, during the foot pursuit there was an officer-involved shooting.

"One suspect was struck by gunfire and unfortunately we also had an officer who was struck by gunfire. He has also been transported to a local hospital where he is in surgery. We have recovered one firearm and we have an outstanding suspect that we believe to be armed," said LAPD spokesperson Meghan Aguilar.

Police set up a large perimeter, going from Vernon to Slauson and from Compton to Alameda.
