VIDEO: Rough Arrest Questioned By OC Public Defender

STANTON (CBSLA) — An Orange County public defender says deputies were too violent when arresting his client and lied about what happened in their report.

Public Defender Scott Sanders is raising questions about the arrest of his client, Mohamed Sayem.

Sayem was sleeping in his car behind a bar in August when the deputies came to check on him. In the dash cam video of the arrest, Sayem is slurring his words when the deputies ask for his identification.

"C'mon! Are you, are you gonna frisk me? Huh?" Sayem says in the video, as a deputy stands in his open door with a hand on the Jeep's roof.

The second deputy, standing in the open passenger door, says all they are asking for is his ID.

After the deputy at the driver's side admonishes Sayem to not get out of the car, Sayem says, "Don't touch me like that" just before a struggle ensues that sets off the driver's side horn.

The deputy appears to try to pull Sayem out of the Jeep, while his partner goes around the back to assist. Sayem was punched several times in the face before appearing to fall to the ground.

In his report, the deputy says he had to use force because Sayem pulled on his vest and wouldn't let go. In a written statement, the Orange County Sheriff's Department said the deputy – who was not named – made ever attempt to deescalate the situation and that appropriate force was used to gain control of an uncooperative, assaultive and intoxicated person.

Sayem faces a felony charge of resisting arrest.
