Apartments Burned In Railroad Fire

SANTA CLARITA (CBSLA) — Crews quickly attacked and beat back a brush fire that burned in Santa Clarita on Monday afternoon, but not before some apartments were damaged.

Dubbed the Railroad Fire, it broke out in the brush across from the Terrace Apartment Complex on Newhall Avenue and State Route 14 at around 4:20 p.m.

The fire was at 10 acres with 60 percent containment as of Monday night.

Three firefighters were injured. The extent of their injuries were unknown as of Monday night.

There were no reports of residents being injured but one resident who spoke to CBSLA's Rachel Kim lost his cat.

Some residents not impacted by the fire were being led back into their homes Monday evening.

"I was home when it happened. I was watching TV. My wife was taking a shower. All of a sudden one of these ladies just knocked on the balcony window and says 'there's a fire.' So my wife came out, she saw the flames and says 'let's get out of here.' The heat blew out the windows," said Alex Castro Ruano.

An evacuation center was set up at Golden Valley High School for those affected by the fire.
