Girl, 6, Kidnapped In Stolen Vehicle Reunited With Family

SOUTH LA  (CBSLA.com)  —   A 6-year-old girl who was sitting in a car stolen in South LA has been reunited with her family.

The car -- a black Lexus -- was stolen at Broadway and 78th Street.

The search for the stolen vehicle and the woman who reportedly drove away with the vehicle continues, officials said. As of 6 p.m., both the vehicle and suspect were still at large. (The 1999 4-door car has a license plate of 4CBT374.)

CBS2's Randy Paige said the incident unfolded about 2 p.m.

A mother was dropping off clothes to the laundromat -- left her lights flashing -- when the suspect jumped into the vehicle and sped off.

About an hour later the girl was dropped off at a community center.

A woman dropped off the child saying, "This child needs help."

The girl was unharmed. Paige spoke to the little girl who said she was in good spirits but understandably scared from her ordeal.

He also spoke to the girl's uncle and grandfather.

"She was taking clothes to the laundry," said uncle Jamon Bell, "she came back out in a rush, but the car was already skirting off. It was already leaving. At that point she called LAPD, and she let them know."

"It just goes to show that anything can happen at any time, Just thankful that she's fine," said Lou Bell, the child's grandfather.

Witnesses at the laundromat said they overheard the alleged car thief making comments about God and saying a lot of things that didn't make a lot of sense.

The girl's uncle allegedly told him that the kidnapper told her she was going to take the girl to get baptized and they were "going to go and have fun together."

As of 10 p.m., KCAL9's Tom Wait said the suspect was still at large.

The girl's grandfather was still numb from the incident.

"Right now I'm really in shock over the whole incident. I'm just getting home from work. I have no words," he said.
