Ex-Immigration Services Officer Sentenced For Taking Bribes

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Prosecutors say a former immigration services officer has been sentenced to more than two years in prison for taking tens of thousands of dollars in bribes to falsely declare that immigrants had met citizenship requirements.

The Los Angeles U.S. Attorney's Office said Wednesday that 68-year-old Daniel Amos pleaded guilty in April to conspiracy and bribery. He was sentenced last week.

Amos was an officer with Citizenship and Immigration Services who had the power to approve applications for citizenship. He admitted accepting more than $50,000 from immigration consultants on behalf of immigrants who were not eligible to become naturalized U.S. citizens.

Prosecutors say Amos falsely declared that immigrants had met requirements including passing the English competency and civics portions of the naturalization interview.
