Barricade Situation In La Verne Ends With Armed Man Taken Into Custody After Nearly 5 Hours

LA VERNE (CBSLA.com)  —  Authorities say a man, possibly armed, was taken into custody after a nearly five-hour standoff Friday evening.

The man remained in his car in La Verne after a police pursuit.

A utility crew saw the man holding what appeared to be a rifle and a tripod aimed at a neighbor's home about 5 p.m. The crew called authorities, but when officers arrived, the man got back into the car and led them on a short chase.

The pursuit ended in a crash at Calle Aragon and Via del Marino, according to Sky9's Stu Mundel. The man first hit a fire hydrant and then ended up on a home's front lawn, police said.

He described it as a nice and quiet neighborhood not used to police activity.

The man refused to get out or comply with police. SWAT remained on scene.

Residents were told to stay in their homes.

Just before 10 p.m., police said, the man was taken into custody.

KCAL9's Laurie Perez reported from the scene and said neighbors were able to breathe a sigh of relief when police gave the neighborhood the all-clear.

Some neighbors were evacuated. No one else was able to move in or out for five hours.

Officials told her they tried tear gas, flash-bangs and even foam in an effort to extricate the man from his vehicle, but he refused to budge.

The suspect reportedly lives with his family several doors down from where he crashed. Authorities reported the man's family was unhurt.

Perez reported the man was checked out by paramedics.

Officials later said the suspect was not injured. There were no injuries reported among law enforcement.
