Big Rig Crashes Into A Dozen Parked Vehicles In Long Beach

LONG BEACH (CBSLA.com) — Authorities Thursday worked to tow away a big rig that crashed into a dozen parked cars in Long Beach.

According to the Long Beach Police Department, officers were sent around 1 a.m. to the area of Santa Fe Avenue and 33rd Street for report of a traffic collision involving a big rig and multiple cars.

Upon their arrival, authorities learned that the truck driver fell asleep at the wheel.

No injuries were reported.

CBS2's Dave Lopez spoke to some of the car owners who awoke to find their vehicles damaged.

"I heard the sound last night," said Dennis Carter"I thought it was people making a lot of noise outside. I didn't know what it was. I just ignored it."

But Carter couldn't ignore what the big rig did to his vintage Volkswagen.

The vintage car was one of 12 side-swiped or smashed by the big rig.

"My car was smashed into another car and into another car," said Vince Manula.

Albert Serrano told Lopez he had just paid his two cars off.

After seeing the vehicles in a headily-damaged inoperable state, he says he cried.

The driver was not cited. Authorities said he wasn't under the influence of drugs or alcohol, wasn't driving recklessly or excessively.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
