Woman Suspected Of Crashing Into Taco Stand Had Blood-Alcohol Level Double Legal Limit, Police Allege

BOYLE HEIGHTS (CBSLA.com) — A 34-year-woman suspected of crashing her sedan into a popular taco stand in Boyle Heights had a blood-alcohol level that was twice the legal limit, police allege.

The deadly crash at 4th and Clarence streets Sunday night claimed the life of a man who was in his 50s. His identity has not been released pending notification of next of kin.

Customers returned to the corner where the taco stand used to be to lay flowers and candles, and pay their respects.

"Instead of going home, I wanted to come over here and see for myself because I could not believe it," said Customer Betty Estrada, who would drive from Whittier just for the tacos.

Estrada is worried about the three employees who were rushed to the hospital. She says they were always so kind.

Police have identified the suspected driver as Maribel Rosas. She has since been arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence.

"It's really sad that somebody else has to pay the final price," said Estrada.

Following the crash, at least two people were pinned underneath the silver sedan.

"I wanted to go see what's up, but I was scared, I thought it was going to explode," said 14-year-old Daniel Esparza, who says he and friends ran to pull people out from underneath the car.

Rosas remains jailed in lieu of $100,000 bail.
