UCLA Signs Record $280 Million Apparel Deal With Under Armour
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — UCLA announced Tuesday a $280 million shoe and apparel deal with Under Armour.
It is the largest such deal in NCAA history.
UCLA's 15-year deal is just the latest to surpass the quarter-billion dollar mark. Ohio State signed a 15-year, $252 million deal earlier this year and the University of Texas signed a 15-year, $250 million deal, both with Nike.
Details of such agreements can vary, but in the case of the University of Texas deal, Nike agreed to make an up-front cash payment of $20 million, in addition to annual payments of $6.5 million to the school. Nike will also supply apparel, equipment and internships for University of Texas students, according to the Texas Tribune.
In the UCLA deal, the school will receive $15 million in cash up-front, the LA Times reported, and will also be paid about $11 million annually in rights and marketing fees.
The deal is a coup for Under Armour, a Baltimore company seeking to expand its footprint on the West Coast. The company signed a deal with UC Berkeley last month.
UCLA had a previous deal with Adidas dating back to 1999, ESPN reported.
Not everyone appeared to be excited by the deal.
UCLA quarterback Josh Rosen retweeted a tweet throwing shade on student-athletes' amateur status, which means they are unpaid even as the school rakes in hundreds of millions of dollars.
