Actor Turned Documentary Filmmaker Sets Up Kickstarter Campaign To Preserve Frank Zappa's Legacy

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com)  —  Perhaps best known as the blond guy in in the 1989 cult classic "Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure," actor-turned-director Alex Winter is going on Kickstarter for a completely new adventure.

Winter, who turns 50 this July, writes, "Frank Zappa lived an insane life. Rock star. Artist. Composer. Activist. Talking head. Family man. Jokester. Absurdist. One of the greatest musicians who ever lived. Even if you don't know anything about him, you've probably heard his name and seen his face."

Calling his campaign, "Who the F*@% is Frank Zappa?," he's hoping to raise $1 million to create a documentary about Zappa's life.

He's about one-third of the way there.

Zappa's family supports the project. They've given him full access to Zappa's vault inside the late musician's Hollywood Hills home -- the vault is said to include a treasure trove of home movies, books, concert footage, personal drawings and never-released recordings. (There could even be insight into where he came up with two of his four kids' names, Moon Unit and Dweezil.)

Winter recently told The New York Times "There's a ton of stuff." And for the record, for a mere $9 million, the entire Zappa house can be yours.
