Philippines President Benigno Aquino To Receive Honorary Doctorate Degree

WESTCHESTER (CBSLA.com) — Philippines President Benigno Aquino will receive an honorary doctorate at Loyola Marymount University Wednesday in an invitation-only ceremony expected to be attended by Mayor Eric Garcetti and Rep. Judy Chu.

Aquino, who was elected in 2010 to a six-year term, is being honored in recognition of "his dedication to his country, his integrity and his embodiment of a Jesuit education," according to Loyola Marymount University Communications and Media Director Celeste Durant. He will be given a Doctor of Humane Letter degree in a ceremony at noon Wednesday at the university's Life Sciences Building Auditorium.

The fourth-generation politician is the 15th president of the Republic of the Philippines and the only son of the late Sen. Benigno Aquino Jr. and former President Corazon Aquino.

Aquino is in California to attend a summit, along with President Barack Obama and the leaders of the 10-nation Association of Southeast Asian Nations at Sunnylands estate in Rancho Mirage Monday and Tuesday.
