Family Seeks Justice For 24-Year-Old Killed In Boyle Heights Hit-And-Run

BOYLE HEIGHTS (CBSLA.com) —   The family of a man killed Sunday in a hit-and-run in Boyle Heights gathered Monday night to demand justice.

The family of True Cowan was in disbelief that the 24-year-old is gone. Moreover, the person who hit him left him to die.

His heartbroken family spoke to KCAL9's Andrea Fujii.

"He was just very innocent. Sad his life got cut short," said his brother Ian.

True was apparently going to the store and walking there after midnight at Caesar Chavez and Soto Street when an unidentified driver hit and dragged him about 100 feet to a parking lot.

The driver than untangled Cowan from his vehicle and took off.

"I just don't understand how someone can just leave him in the street like this, like a rag doll," his brother said.

Family members say the deceased had a promising future -- he was a member of the National Guard and he was also studying computer science at Cal State Dominguez Hills.

The family was already dealing with tragedy. True's father died just last week.

The family is hoping that whoever hit True will come forward and do the right thing. They say they are already in enough pain.

"So that we can be at peace with burying two people in one week, his father and him," says stepmother Marcy Cowan.

The Cowans have set up a GoFundMe page to help pay for funeral expenses.

They are also hoping True will be remembered for how he lived and not how he died.

"He was very full of love. And I know my brother would forgive whoever did this to him, whether he turns himself in or not," Ian said.
