Porto's Bakery In Burbank Tops Yelp's 100 Places To Eat In U.S.

BURBANK (CBSLA.com) —  Food lovers have spoken and the best place to eat in the country is in Southern California.

Porto's Bakery in Burbank has topped Yelp's list of 100 places to eat in the U.S. for 2016.

"And it's humming. This place is wild and crazy," said Christine Price, who hadn't set foot inside Porto's until Thursday.

"My daughter said, 'Hey, Yelp's number one rated restaurant is right around the corner from us,' " Price said.

Customers who come here often say they're not at all surprised by the title.

After all, the list is driven by customer reviews.

"We're happy for our customers because without them we would never get that," said Betty Porto.

In the past, she says this family-owned business has made the list, but never as number one.

"All of a sudden with social media, with Facebook, with Yelp, look how much faster we're getting recognition," said Porto. "That's the beauty about this new generation."

Foodies have a choice to nibble on sweet and savory items.

From cakes to Cuban sandwiches, the recipes are all handed down from her mother, Rosa, who started this business in the 1970s after immigrating from Cuba.

Now, Porto and her two siblings run the food institution, which has other locations in Glendale and Downey.

The best sellers include the Cuban sandwiches, potato balls, and the cheese roll.
