Super Pricey Ads For Super Bowl 50

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Super Bowl 50 between the Broncos and Panthers kicks off  Sunday. The big game is only part of the show. Many viewers tune in just for the halftime shows and commercials.

It has become a sport between advertisers to create the most buzzed-about Super Bowl ads, which are now splashed across social media weeks before the big game to get more bang for their buck.

And it takes a lot of bucks. A 30-second spot now costs almost $5 million. That's more than $166,000 per second. During the first Super Bowl, a half-minute ad only cost advertisers $38,000.

But a lot of big companies are not afraid to fork over the mega bucks including South Korea's second-largest automaker Kia. "People saw the spot, came in, test drove the vehicle and then ultimately bought the vehicle," said Michael Sprague of Kia Motors America COO.

Car and beer ads that target men still dominate. But women are increasingly the focus. Celebrities push a variety of products, while cute and cuddly animals never fail to draw viewers.

"It's appointment TV. So it's the one time where everyone in America is watching," said advertising executive Linda Kaplan-Thaler.

Many marketing analysts consider Apple's 1984 ad introducing the first Macintosh computer to have had the biggest impact on viewers.

But despite many other advertisers spending big bucks to promote their products, only few commercials have made a big splash with viewers.
