BMX Star, Former MTV Host Dave Mirra Dies Of Apparent Suicide

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com)   —  Authorities in North Carolina have identified 41-year-old Dave Mirra, a legendary BMX bike rider, as an apparent suicide.

Mirra also hosted MTV's "Real World/Road Rules Challenge" (now known as "The Challenge") from 2004-2005. His other credits include "Ultimate X: The Movie" and "Expendable Three," both in 2002.

"Expendable Three" also featured musician Lemmy Kilmister, aka Lemmy, who died at age 70 in LA in December.

Police said Mirra was found in his truck with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Until two years ago, Mirra held the record for most X Games medals. He won medals in every games from their start in 1995 to 2009.

The Syracuse-born Mirra won a total of 24 medals, 14 of them gold.

Mirra was so popular in the world of NMX that he also lent his name to a video game series, "Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX."

He is survived by a wife and two children. On Feb. 18 the couple would have celebrated their 10th anniversary. According to Bleacher Report, Mirra posted a picture of the couple toasting with champagne just hours before he killed himself.
