People Living Near Burn Hillsides Brace For 2nd Round Of Mudslides

GLENDORA (CBSLA.com) — People who live in the hillsides near last year's wildfires spent another anxious night Tuesday worried about possible mudslides.

The burn areas include Glendora, Silverado Canyon, Camarillo Springs and Solimar.

Many Glendora homeowners were back at the city yard Tuesday night stocking up on sandbags as they braced for more rain.

Cheri Fortner is relieved her sandbags and K-rail barriers kept water and mud out of her house.

"It was very heavy. Oh my gosh! It was like a deluge of water," Fortner said. "I was very worried at times especially because we've had a mudslide out here on Grand."

Cheri's mind now is on tomorrow's storm. "So that's the one I'm concerned about because everything got wet today and soaked," she said.

Rainbow Drive looked more like a river earlier Tuesday. Residents there kept a close eye on the rising water, but they were confident that the K-rails and sandbags would hold up, at least for now.

A few miles away, someone captured on video Hicrest Road, just north of Sierra Madre Avenue.  It was a good example of the debris flow and flooding in that area. The city of Glendora said it received 1.5 to 2 inches on Tuesday.

Over in nearby Azusa, the mud and debris came cascading down Ed Heinlein's backyard.

"People in the flood areas need to think about what I am taking with me so I can get out of here immediately, have stuff packed in their car like I do," Heinlein said.
