Man Who Allegedly Killed His Father After Dad Went On Murderous Rampage Released

ROWLAND HEIGHTS (CBSLA.com)  —  The man who allegedly shot and killed his father after his dad went on a murderous rampage inside his Rowland Heights home on New Year's eve, was released Saturday.

Officials released Christopher Morey, 33, pending further investigation. Morey had been charged with murder.

The case will be presented to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office at a later date.

On arresting Morey, officials said that once he was able to wrestle a gun from his father's possession, the dad no longer posed a threat to his safety. Police later said Morey's dad was in possession of "hundreds" of weapons.  Neighbors told KCAL9's Crystal Cruz police had often been called to the home in the 2200 block of Baston Avenue and that Morey's father was a heavy drinker.

Authorities believe Morey shot and killed his father after the 54-year-old man took a semi-automatic handgun and fatally shot his 54-year-old bedridden wife, his son's 46-year-old girlfriend and his son's friend, 27-year-old Earnie Calzadilla. The incident happened just after 8:35 p.m. on December 31.

City News Service has identified the father as Michael Morey. They identified the wife as Betty Morey and the girlfriend as Linda Merrell.

Unconfirmed reports said the father's rampage was touched off after a fight over a washing machine.
