EL SEGUNDO (CBSLA.com) — Police sought the public’s help Wednesday to locate and identify a carjacking suspect who assaulted a woman in El Segundo.

The incident unfolded shortly before 6 p.m. on Nov. 20, located in the 1900 block of East Maple Avenue, according to the El Segundo Police Department.

“The victim was walking to her car when an unknown suspect attacked her from behind, threw her to the ground and repeatedly hit her in the back of the head with a closed fist,” said Lt. Scott Doukakis. “The suspect then grabbed her car keys and purse, and fled in the victim’s car southbound on Sepulveda Boulevard.”

Just after 6:30 p.m., the victim’s car was involved in a felony hit-and-run crash in the intersection of Crenshaw Boulevard and Marine Avenue, located in the city of Gardena.

Police said the suspect fled from the scene on foot heading northbound on Crenshaw Boulevard.

Detectives have described the suspect as an African American man believed to be between 30 and 35-years-old who has short hair or is bald, stands 5-foot-10 tall and weighs 170 pounds. He was last seen wearing dark clothing and carried a camouflage backpack.

The investigation is ongoing.
