Bicyclist Fatally Struck By Vehicle In West Covina; Hit-And-Run Driver Arrested

WEST COVINA (CBSLA.com) — A 25-year-old woman suspected of fatally striking a bicyclist with her vehicle has been arrested, police said on Tuesday.

According to the West Covina Police Department, Presley Danielle Rodriguez, of Glendora, was arrested for felony charges of driving under the influence causing great bodily injury or death and hit-and-run.

The deadly crash took place shortly before midnight on Monday.

Rodriguez is accused of driving northbound in the 1100 block of South Valinda Avenue when she struck a male bicyclist.

An officer who was parked in the area heard the sound of the collision and saw Rodriguez driving away northbound. She was stopped at Cameron Avenue and subsequently taken into custody.

Meanwhile, authorities located the man lying on the street upon their arrival to the scene.

Paramedics pronounced him dead. The victim has been identified as Jose Ruiz-Villanueva, 44, of La Puente.

Authorities said Rodriguez did not sustain injuries during the crash.

She is being held on $100,000 and is expected to appear in court at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday.
