Family Mourns Loss Of 16-Year-Old Football Player Gunned Down In Watts

WATTS (CBSLA.com) — A family on Monday night prayed for justice after their 16-year-old son was gunned down in Watts over the weekend.

"Y'all took his life. He had family that loves him and I miss my baby," said Timeca Person, the victim's mother, in a message to those who killed her teenage son. "Y'all took him away from me."

Her son, Elijah Galbreath, was walking along 103rd Street near Grape in Watts Sunday afternoon around 2:20 p.m. when he was shot.

Police said a car had pulled up alongside Galbreath, then one person got out and shot him several times before getting away.

Police don't have a motive for the crime. They said Galbreath was not a gang member and had never been in trouble with the law.

"His dream to become a football player, you know? His brother just went to college. You know, he wanted to be like his brother," said Person, who explains that her son was a popular student and star running back who played for Hawkins High School.

"It really hurts. They pull, they pull my heart out of my chest," she said. "He was a hero. He was my hero. And he's not coming back home."

Person showed CBS2/KCAL9 some of the letters Galbreath had received from colleges interested in him. She holds onto them and to the hope that her son's killers will be caught.

"God is good. They will pay for that," she said. "Stop the killing."

Police said they have no suspects and witnesses haven't come forward. Anyone with more information about this case was asked to call LAPD's South Bureau.
