Studio City Tries To Return To Normal Following Deadly Officer-Involved Shooting
STUDIO CITY (CBSLA.com) — A single bouquet of flowers now lay outside Union Bank on busy Ventura Boulevard.
Yesterday a man was killed during an officer-involved shooting with police. Some of it was captured on cell phone video.
After the shooting came the bomb squad and robot-when it was believed the man may have had explosive materials with him before he went down.
KCAL9's Jennifer Kastner reported Saturday businesses are trying to return to a sense of normalcy.
The chaos forced dozens of businesses to shut down for the entire afternoon and evening -- thousands of dollars in lost revenue during what would usually be a bustling start to the weekend.
Bernadette O'Rourke owns Mexicali Cocina Cantina.
"We probably lost six to eight thousand dollars yesterday in normal Friday business," said O'Rourke.
Big Sugar Bake Shop -- across the boulevard --lost about seven hours of business.
"The fact that we were closed for that long was a definitely a financial hit," said Janes Coster of Big Sugar.
Witnesses say a deranged man with a suspicious package and backpack fired at least one round into the air before being swarmed by LAPD. At that point an officer fired and hit the man. (There had been speculation that the man might have taken his own life but Kastner reported Saturday that police confirmed they fired the fatal shot.)
The bomb squad's robot deemed the suspicious items to be safe and now it's mostly back to business as usual along Ventura Boulevard.
But shops owners -- like the woman who owns Classic Toys -- say it'll take awhile to get over the shock.
"It was a strange day yesterday. Really strange," said the owner.
The dead man's name hasn't been released.
