Even President Obama Weighs In On Debate Over Peas In Guacamole

FAIRFAX DISTRICT (CBSLA.com) — A recipe that calls for adding green peas to guacamole caused a social media frenzy Wednesday and even got President Obama's attention.

The foodie furor erupted on social media after The New York Times tweeted a recipe for guacamole made with the unexpected ingredient.

According to the publication, it's "one of those radical moves that is also completely obvious after you taste it."

"Guacamole is only with an avocado," Rian Risner, a guacamole lover, said. "What's peas? Leave it to the New Yorkers to be talking about a pea."

Once word of the recipe spread on Twitter, it stirred up plenty of reaction, even earning the hashtag #GUACAMOLEGATE.

President Obama even weighed in, posting:

And it turns out peas in guacamole is one of the only issues both sides of the aisle can agree on.

Republican presidential hopeful Jeb Bush also tweeted:

At the original Farmer's Market, Loteria Grill Chef Jimmy Shaw says don't expect to see peas added to his guacamole any time soon.

"I would really tend to stay with straight forward, delicious guacamole," he said.

More than 80 percent of the nation's avocados come from California, which is partly why folks locally say tainting guacamole with a lesser vegetable would be desecration.

"I've grown up eating guacamole with avocados, so yeah not interested in peas," said Marc Sanders, another guacamole lover.

People around the world are now weighing in and many of them are saying they're not ready to give peas a chance.
