Murder-Suicide Reported At Carson Residence Where Homeowner Had 8-Hour Standoff With SWAT

CARSON (CBSLA.com) — Deputies surrounded a Carson home Sunday morning where an armed suspect reportedly was believed to be barricaded inside.

The Sheriff's Department said the incident ended around 2:45 p.m. when SWAT members entered the home.

Sheriff's deployed a SWAT team after receiving a report of shots fired around 6:30 a.m. in the 500 block of East Moorehaven Drive.

Neighbors say the man holed up inside a two-story home is Roy Wills, Sr., who lives there with his wife, Lucille. They say he's in his late 70s or 80s and has been depressed since undergoing open heart surgery a year ago. The couple have four adult children, three sons and a daughter.

Those residents added that the couple has never caused any trouble before. Police said they had been called to the home on previous occasions and weapons had been taken out.

A man claiming to be Wills' son showed up at the scene frantically trying to cross the crime scene tape, according to CBS2/KCAL9's Joy Benedict. He was under the impression his mother, Lucille, was dead.

Surrounding homes were evacuated and Moorehaven and Roa drives were closed off to traffic and pedestrians.

Officials Sunday said two dead were found inside the home and investigators are now considering the case to be a murder-suicide.

CBS2's Adrianna Weingold spoke to friends and family of the victims who were shocked and devastated.

Some of them were in tears, some of them struggled to even stand up, she reported.

"I spoke to the son early this morning," said Jeffrey Davis, a Wills family friend. "My friend is grieving. What do you tell a man whose mother is dead? Only to come to find out they're both expired. What do you do?"

Family friend "Chosen," said, "No one expects something like this to happen. Especially to good people. And I guess it's like that cliche, why do bad things happen to good people? They were good people."

The Wills lived in the neighborhood for 50 years, Weingold said.
