Fontana Residents Spend Part Of Second Night In The Dark

FONTANA (CBSLA.com) — About 1,500 Southern California Edison customers in Fontana have been without electricity since the predawn hours on Saturday, after gusty winds pushed a tree onto two power poles, disrupting service.

KCAL9's Brittney Hopper reported that residents awoke at 3 a.m. Saturday to a loud boom, sparks flying, and their power going out.

By Saturday night the wind was still howling, although not as bad as earlier in the morning, but residents were in the dark once again.

Adrian Mesa, who has lived in Fontana since 1967, said he's never seen the Santa Ana winds pick up like this before.

"We have three refrigerators, one inside and one out in the back, and they are full of food," Mesa said. "So all our food is going to go."

Close to 50 Southern California Edison employees worked hard Saturday to try to get power restored. In the meantime they gave out flashlights, water and ice. Power restoration was expected to take until 7 a.m. Sunday.

The wind caused major problems throughout the Southland on Saturday. In North Hollywood a billboard came crashing down onto cars, and elsewhere trees and power lines came down.
