2 Quakes Shake Area North Of Castaic

CASTAIC (CBSLA.com/AP) —  Two earthquakes have struck north of Los Angeles, shaking parts of Ventura and Los Angeles counties, but fire officials say no significant damage took place.

A magnitude-4.2 temblor hit at 7:18 p.m. Saturday approximately seven miles north of the town of Castaic, and nearly 50 miles from Los Angeles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. It was originally reported as magnitude-4.5.

That quake generated more than a dozen aftershocks, according to seismologist Lucy Jones of the USGS. She says she doesn't believe the shaker would compromise the integrity of the Castaic Dam.

Jones says a magnitude-3.0 quake that struck 20 minutes prior eight miles north of Castaic was a foreshock to the magnitude-4.2 temblor.

No damages or injuries have been reported.

Jones says the quake was a reminder for Southland residents to be prepared. She encouraged people to have earthquake kits ready and up-to-date. That includes organizing disaster supplies, such as food, water and first aid kits.

It's also recommended that people secure their home by finding potential hazards and locking down things that can move.

Many will find it useful to have an emergency communication plan in place because phone lines are often tied up following a disaster.

Finally, important documents should be storied in a safe place and people should make sure they have enough insurance coverage.
