LAPD: 'Officer Shot Woman Armed With Gun, Bat In Hollywood'

HOLLYWOOD (CBSLA.com) — Authorities investigated the circumstances Friday surrounding an officer involved shooting in Hollywood.

According to the Los Angeles Police Department, officers were sent to the Hollywood & Highland Center, located in the 6800 block of Hollywood Boulevard, around 1:24 a.m. for reports of a dispute between two women arguing in the underground level of the parking structure.

Once on scene, they found one of the women — 47-year-old Diamond Vargas — beating on a motorcycle with a bat.

She allegedly pointed a gun at the officers after noticing they were on scene. In defense, an LAPD officer proceeded to shoot Vargas in the leg.

She was transported by ambulance for treatment of her gunshot wound. Authorities reported she has been listed in stable condition.

CBS2's Jasmine Viel spoke with LAPD Cmdr. Dennis Kato, who explained the popular shopping area has their own security personnel.

"On a normal night, there is always foot beats here, on this complex, and they have their own security," Kato said. "What started this, was a call from their security personnel reporting a dispute in that parking structure."

Police explained the second woman involved in the dispute was taken by officers at the scene for questioning.

Viel reported it was unclear if she sustained any injuries in the shooting.

Officers that were involved in the shooting were not injured. They were placed on leave, as protocol, while authorities investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

It remains unclear what prompted the argument to begin between both women.

Vargas was booked for assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer.
