MAIBU (CBSLA.com) — A 9-mile stretch of Pacific Coast Highway could reopen Thursday, days after three mudslides forced its closure.
The California Department of Transportation says State Route 1 between Las Posas Road and Yerba Buena Road could open by late-Thursday.
On Sunday, a brief but powerful storm caused at least three feet of mud to come down in some areas, forcing about a dozen drivers to ditch their cars after getting stuck in the debris.
But Caltrans says crews are expected to remove the K-rails and eliminate the debris and mud from the debris basins and clear out the drain inlets in order to re-open the highway.
Caltrans says drivers, meanwhile, should continue to use alternate routes.
