Long Beach Residents Face Tougher Water Use Restrictions

LONG BEACH (CBSLA.com) — City officials in Long Beach are imposing tougher water restrictions as the drought situation worsens.

KNX 1070's Pete Demetriou reports residents will required to cut their landscape watering from three days per week down to two or face potential fines of up to $200 per day.

The move comes on the heels of a vote Thursday by the Long Beach Board of Water Commissioners to declare a stage 1 water supply shortage, according to the Long Beach Press-Telegram.

Under the new restrictions, residents will be prohibited from filling or refilling swimming pools with drinking water, the Press-Telegram reported.

Despite the new authority, however, no one has actually been fined for excessive water usage in the city's history.

The measures will take effect after a required five-day public notification period and could extend beyond March 2015 if a further water shortage is declared, according to the Press-Telegram.

Long Beach commissioners declared an imminent water supply shortage and subsequent use prohibitions in February.
