11 Arrested In Street Racing Crackdown

CARSON (CBSLA.com) — Eleven people were arrested Friday as part of a crackdown on illegal street racing in Carson.

Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputies and California Highway Patrol officers broke up a street race at an undisclosed location as part of an effort to halt the "growing movement" of illegal street racing and cruising, according to a LASD report.

Friday's operation began at 10 p.m., a department spokesperson said.

In addition to the arrests, 17 citations were issued and eight vehicles were towed.

"Social media is used to promote the gathering of vehicles to participate in illegal activities and often draws upwards of 300 vehicles and more than 500 spectators," read a department report.

"Street racing and cruising is not only a public nuisance, it is highly dangerous," the report continued, adding such illegal activity "often results in traffic collisions, injuries and fatalities."

Anyone with information about illegal street racing is encouraged to contact the LASD's Carson Station at (310) 830-1123.

Those who wish to remain anonymous may contact Crime Stoppers by dialing (800) 222-TIPS (8477), by texting the letters TIPLA plus your tip to CRIMES (274637) or by using the Crime Stoppers website.
