$1M Federal Grant Will Fund Investigations Of Meth Manufacturing, Distribution

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The California Department of Justice will use a nearly $1 million federal grant to try to slow the flow of methamphetamine into the U.S through Southern California.

Attorney General Kamala Harris announced Monday that her office will use the money to hire six agents in Los Angeles to investigate the manufacture and distribution of methamphetamine in California.

She says cross-border criminal gangs have made California the nation's single largest entry point for the drug. An estimated 70 percent of smuggled methamphetamine enters the country through the San Diego Port of Entry.

The competitive federal grant is through the U.S. Department of Justice's Office of Community Oriented Policing Services.

The additional agents will work with 18 existing state task forces across California.
