Water Main Break Repairs Underway In WeHo
WEST HOLLYWOOD (CBSLA.com) — Crews in West Hollywood capped several open valves that were responsible for continuing water flow in West Hollywood following Friday's massive pipe rupture.
The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) reported via Twitter on Saturday morning that the water flow had been controlled nearly 19 hours after the massive water main break sent thousands of gallons of water gushing onto the Sunset Strip.
Several hours prior, authorities had told CBS2's Joy Benedict that the broken pipe was sending water into the streets at a rate of about 100 gallons of water per minute. According to the LADWP, the water dispersal had been the result of multiple open valves in the area that feed the 36-inch ruptured pipe.
Richard Harasick, the assistant director of water operations for the DWP, told KNX 1070 that about 15 valves had to be shut off.

The pipe, which was originally laid in 1917, ruptured about 2:40 p.m. Friday at the corner of Sunset Boulevard and Olive Drive near La Cienega Boulevard. Although the break forced the closure of about a mile-long stretch of Sunset Boulevard, there were no reports of significant damage to businesses or homes.
The DWP has not provided a timeline for repairs. However, several hotels and businesses were expected to reopen Saturday.
