Man Arrested For Attempted Murder, Assault Of Elderly Man Leaving A Fontana Gym

FONTANA (CBSLA.com) — A 20-year-old man was in custody Tuesday on attempted murder and assault charges after allegedly attacking an elderly man who was walking home from the gym.

Officers responded to a brutal assault call around 9:42 p.m. on Aug. 14 to the area of Sierra and Walnut Avenue in Fontana.

The victim, an 80-year-old man, was walking home from working out when a suspect confronted him "for no apparent reason", according to the Fontana Police Department.

Jonathon Paul Silva reportedly punched the man several times in the face, knocked him down to the ground, attempted to strangle him and bit him approximately 10 times on the stomach.

Silva was detained and arrested after a brief struggle, officials said.

The elderly man was transported to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center for treatment of major swelling to the face, a laceration over his left eye, a broken nose and bite marks on the lower stomach.

Anyone with information regarding this incident was asked to contact the Fontana Police Department anonymous hotline at 909-356-TIPS or submit an anonymous tip online.
