Covina Man Says Woman Swiped Package From Doorstep Minutes After Delivery

COVINA (CBSLA.com) — A Covina man is warning residents about a package thief in the area.

KCAL9's Jeff Nguyen reports the victim, who wished only to be identified as James, says he discovered an unidentified woman had swiped a UPS package from his front porch while he was home Tuesday after watching security video.

"I was upset. I was surprised," he said.

"I checked the tracking number showed it was delivered [around 4:40 p.m.]," he said.

Thirteen minutes later, a woman is seen on surveillance video walking away with the package, the third stolen from his porch in the past year.

Fearing the woman, who James says has light hair and a tattoo on her left arm, is also stealing packages that contain far more important things, including medication or irreplaceable items, he hopes sharing his story will inspire his neighbors become more vigilant.

He also hopes it will spur policy change from shipping companies.

"I think shippers, carriers can look at their procedures to reduce that. I say that because the because the UPS driver didn't ring my doorbell. Didn't knock on the door. I was home. Had I known, I could've picked up the package," James said.

KCAL9 sent the surveillance video to UPS and asked the company if its driver followed procedures with the dropoff.

A spokesperson had yet to respond to the request.

"As we as a society buy more stuff online, more and more packages are being delivered. And there's going to be more of these instances of crime of opportunity," James said, adding that he's not yet sure if he'll be paid for the loss.
