Boy, 5, Killed In Accidental Shooting At Nuevo Home

NUEVO (CBSLA.com) — Police Wednesday said a shooting that killed a 5-year-old boy at a Riverside County home was accidental.

The incident was reported around 5:20 p.m. Tuesday in the 31000 block of Wolfskill Avenue in Nuevo, the Riverside County Sheriff's Department said.

When deputies arrived on scene, they found the child deceased in the home, suffering from a gunshot wound.

A small marijuana grow was also located in the rear of the property, but deputies say it was unrelated to the shooting, according to Dep. Albert Martinez.

No arrests have been made.

KCAL9's Crytstal Cruz reports according to neighbors, the family rents the home and moved in last summer.

Neighbors also say the child is from the L.A.-area and was at the home visiting his grandparents.

Martinez confirmed family members have been interviewed and two investigations are ongoing, one into the child's death and one into the marijuana plants.

"If there is a crime, definitely the people involved - they'll be arrested," Martinez said. "The case is complex though. Any time that a child is injured the detectives have to look real careful, especially to find out [if there was] any type of neglect... every incident is different. That's why it has taken this long," he said.

Martinez could not confirm the specifics surrounding the child's death, who the gun belonged to or if it was registered.

He did confirm there have been no past service calls to the home.
