Montebello Mayor's Husband Arrested In Narcotics Investigation

MONTEBELLO (CBSLA.com) — Los Angeles County Sheriff's detectives Thursday served a search warrant at the home of Montebello's mayor, leading to the arrest of her husband.

Detectives served search warrants at residences at the 1500 and 1600 blocks of Los Angeles Avenue at 7:10 a.m. as part of a narcotics investigation, deputies said.

Ruben Guerrero, the husband of mayor Christina Cortez, was arrested as he left his home in the 1500 block of Los Angeles Avenue, according to officials.

Guerrero, 44, was booked at the East Los Angeles Sheriff's station on suspicion of sales of methamphetamine and sales of narcotics near a school. His bail was set at $60,000.

The couple's neighbor, Louise Ortega, has lived in the area for 31 years and says she knows Guerrero and Cortez, who grew up on the street, well.

"Christina is a really nice person. She's not involved in anything like that," Ortega told KCAL9's Serene Branson.

The local election is weeks away on November 5 and Ortega says it's been a nasty campaign.

"As far as I'm concerned it's dirty politics," she said.

A woman who answered the door at the home Thursday night said the mayor was not available.

However, in a message to KCAL9, Cortez said she was grateful for the support.

"Of course I'm very disappointed [and] just like everyone else shocked by today's events," she said. "I just hope and urge everyone to let this investigation take its course. As an elected official I've stood very strong with the understanding of the danger of drugs and today's events will not change that."

The Sheriff's Department said no one else in the home was under investigation.
