Suspect Arrested After Man, 24, Found Dead In Santa Ana

SANTA ANA (CBSLA.com) — Police have arrested a 27-year-old Santa Ana man on suspicion of killing a 24-year-old man in the city Tuesday.

Jose Miguel Avalos was booked into the SAPD jail for homicide Wednesday, less than 24 hours after the death of Gustavo Avalos Salazar, also of Santa Ana.

Officers responded to the 1000 block of Walnut Street at 9:45 p.m. Tuesday to assist a male adult who was found on the sidewalk and was apparently in need of medical attention, according to Police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna.

The victim, later identified as Salazar, suffered visible injuries to his upper torso, and was pronounced dead after Orange County Fire Authority and paramedics arrived on scene, Bertagna said.

Investigators believe Salazar may have been involved in a physical altercation near Edinger Avenue and Flower Street and was later driven to the 1000 block of Walnut, where he was found by patrol officers.

An autopsy is scheduled for Thursday.

Anyone with information about the case was asked to contact Santa Ana Police detectives at (714) 245-8390 or Orange County Crime Stoppers at 1-855-TIP-OCCS.

Once all aspects of the investigation are complete, detectives will submit the case to the Orange County District Attorney's Office for filing.
