Human Remains Discovered On Bike Path In Montebello

MONTEBELLO (CBSLA.com) — Human remains were discovered Wednesday afternoon on a bike path in Montebello.

The scattered skeletal remains were found by a cyclist around 11 a.m. along the Rio Hondo Bike Trail near the 900 block of North Lincoln Avenue.

Sheriff's homicide detectives were sent to the scene to assist Montebello police in the investigation.

"It's very early in the investigation, so we'll work with our Missing Persons Unit, and Montebello's, and start going backwards to see if we can find anybody who matches the age and description here," said Lt. Dave Coleman of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

A biker told KCAL9's Juan Fernandez that she would often see a certain man in the area, which is known to have transients.

"I see a man rolling with a suitcase every morning. I think it's weird because he just rolls by with the suitcase walking. It's right towards that area where they found the remains. (He was) maybe around mid- to late-40s. He looked a little off. He looks homeless. He doesn't look normal, like a regular, everyday Joe," said Karina Velasquez.

Francis Fernandez commutes every day, but said he never sees anything out of the ordinary.

"I usually see people on horses and people on bikes. People riding for fun. I never see homeless guys around here," he said.
