OC Doctor Fatally Shot At Newport Beach Medical Office

NEWPORT BEACH (CBSLA.com) — An Orange County doctor was fatally shot Monday at a medical office in Newport Beach.

Police responded to a patient exam room on the second floor of the building at 520 Superior Ave. near Hoag Hospital Newport Beach at 2:45 p.m.

"We received a call of six to seven possible shots fired inside this office building," Kathy Lowe of the Newport Beach Police Department said.

Ronald Gilbert, a 52-year-old urologist, was shot multiple times in the upper chest. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

"When we realized what happened, we locked the doors. We weren't letting people in or out," employee Jeanette Brauchler said.

"The suspect was taken into custody without incident. Everyone else in the office building was safe," Lowe said. "It does appear to be an isolated incident."

The suspect, who is reportedly in his late 50s to late 60s, was a patient of Gilbert's a few years ago. His identity is expected to be released by authorities sometime Tuesday.

"Now it's like we aren't even safe at work. I mean we thought that we were, but now they're shooting doctors?" employee Annelle Corona said.

Gilbert is survived by his wife and two children.

The motive is still under investigation.
