Costa Mesa Police: DUI Driver Ran Into Man's Car, Drove Over His Legs

COSTA MESA (CBSLA.com) — Orange County police say they've tracked down a 49-year-old woman who allegedly ran over another driver when he got out of his car to inspect a crash.

Officers suspect Vilma Velasquez was driving drunk when she crashed her car into another vehicle at 10:40 p.m. Friday. The collision occurred on 19th Street, west of Anaheim Avenue, Costa Mesa police Sgt. Bryan Wadkins said.

The other driver had exited his vehicle to look for possible damage when Velasquez allegedly drove him over.

The victim was taken to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana and sustained severe trauma to his legs. He is expected to survive his injuries, Wadkins said.

A witness was able to give police part of the license plate number and police tracked the suspect's Honda sedan to an apartment complex in the 900
block of 19th Street.

Officers found Velasquez at approximately 1:30 a.m. and placed her under arrest on suspicion of hit-and-run and DUI, police Sgt. Jerry Souza.

She was being held on $100,000 bail at the Orange County Jail, Wadkins said.
