Man Found Allegedly Hiding In Trash Can Arrested On Suspicion Of Burglary

SAN BERNARDINO (CBSLA.com) — Police are crediting an alert resident with helping to prevent a suspected burglar from making off with a family's items in San Bernardino.

The incident occurred about 12:16 p.m. Friday at a home in the 300 block of W. 23rd Street.

A statement by the San Bernardino Police Department says a witness observed the suspect, identified by authorities as 22-year-old Nicholas Joseph Costello, initially knock on the front door of the home.

When he received no answer, police say Costello went around to the back of the home and forced entry.

"Once inside Costello collected household items and set them near the back door," the statement said.

Officers were dispatched to the scene following a 911 call made by the witness.

Upon arriving on scene, officers say they saw the suspect running into the garage of the home.

He was subsequently arrested after being found allegedly hiding inside a trash can.

Costello has been booked on suspicion of burglary and probation violations.
