LA Schools Get Awards For Promoting Nutrition
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Los Angeles schools will receive more than a quarter million dollars in federal prize money for winning "Healthier US Schools Challenge" awards for promoting nutrition and physical activities.
City News Service reports "gold medal of distinction awards" and $2,000 prizes went to Castelar, Glassell Park and Lorena elementary schools. Silver medals and $1,000 prizes went to Brockton, Leland, Purche, Reseda and the 112th Street elementary schools.
Other awards brought the total prizes paid to the LA Unified School District's wellness programs to $252,000.
The awards from the U.S. Department of Agriculture go to schools participating in the National School Lunch Program.
