Man On The Loose After Trying To Run Over Officer At Trader Joe's

SHERMAN OAKS (CBSLA.com) —A Los Angeles Police Department officer shot at a man who allegedly tried to run him over in the parking lot of Trader Joe's in Sherman Oaks on Tuesday.

The incident happened shortly after 6:30 p.m. at the grocery store on the corner of Hazeltine Avenue and Riverside Drive.

Witnesses told KCAL9's Suraya Fadel that they saw a customer take off with a case of wine.

Trader Joe's employees ran after the culprit.

Two cops who were investigating an unrelated traffic incident in the area immediately responded to the scene.

"The officers formed the opinion that a robbery just occurred," said Gus Villanueva from the LAPD. "They tried to intervene. The suspect entered a white van, at which point he sped off, almost striking one or both of the officers. At that point an officer-involved shooting occurred."

One of the officers fired a couple of shots at the van, but the assailant got away.

Police are searching for the suspect.
