City Council: El Monte Lifeguards Fired Over 'Gangnam Style' Video Should Get Jobs Back

EL MONTE (CBSLA.com) — The El Monte City Council recommended Tuesday that 14 lifeguards should get their jobs back after they were fired for filming a spoof of the Korean pop music video, "Gangnam Style."

It's now up to Interim City Manager Dayle Keller to decide if the ex-workers will be reinstated at the city's Aquatic Center.

Lifeguard Michael Roa said, "We're waiting for reinstatement. In terms of the process of how that will go, we're still uncertain. The power lies with the city manager."

The lifeguards were fired in September after their version of the popular Psy song, called "Lifeguard Style," was posted to YouTube.

City officials said the lifeguards were terminated because they used city property for private use.
